Creating content with a "purpose," or with a helpful resource or content upgrade, can be a stressful situation. In those moments of frustration, we tend to ask ourselves the same question, What to write about this week? Sometimes, it can be an extremely nerve-racking experience, especially when you are tapping your keyboard without inspiration. Despite these frustrating moments, it is important not to forget your reason for creating your blog. Before you list them out, hopefully, one of your reason will include:
Building A Solid Tribe!
If that didn't make your list, then that may be the root to some of the issues you are experiencing when creating content that MATTERS to your audience. Luckily for you, your blog is a ready-made resource that helps you interact with your audience and get a clear understanding about their thoughts, feelings, frustrations and the type of solutions they are looking for. The people that read your blog, frequently, are those that are interested in what you have to say and the type of resources you can provide them ... they like you. So, it makes sense to concentrate on them. Aside from writing awesome content, you also need to be extremely clear on who you are writing for. Interact with them and get to know them, and in return, they will tell you what they need (and what they enjoy) ... this is truly special. Through this type of interaction, you rarely have to guess about what to write and the type of products or services you should consider offering.
If you are still curious about how you can make these bonds happen, through your blog, I have a few tips that will inspire you:
1. Just Ask
One of the best and easiest ways to really get to know your audience is by coming right out and asking them questions about how they feel, what inspires them or even what they thought about the content you shared. They will give their opinions in the comments and you'll learn a lot about the kind of content they want to read. It’s one of the easiest ways to get direct feedback. It gives your readers a chance to interact with you on a one-on-one basis and besides, people love being asked for their opinion. Also, it’s just nice when someone you look up to and respect, asks for your opinion.
Some of the questions you could ask your audience, could be:
· What do you want to learn more about [insert your expertise]?
· Why do you read my blog?
· What are you struggling with most at the moment?
Asking questions is a great way to get a better understanding about who your audience is and the stage they’re in, in their businesses and life. Whether you do it via email, a survey or on your blog, it’ll take away the guesswork. So…. just ask!
2. Don’t Ignore Your Comments
When people comment on your blog, they are indirectly telling you what they like and don't like. Use this feedback for future posts. For example, readers may ask a question about something you said in the post or something related to it. Start a running list of these topics.
Please don’t ignore people. Obviously if you have hundreds of comments, you can’t get to every last one, but make an effort to respond to the few that resonate with you. When you ignore people it gives the impression that you don’t care, and frankly, it comes off a bit rude.
3. Who Are They?
This might seem really basic and that’s why it can be so easily overlooked. But do you really, really know who’s actually reading your blog? Google Analytics is too fancy for me, but I love the simplicity of Squarespace Analytics and the relevancy of the information. Here is some of the information you will get to see:
· Where are your readers are coming from.
· What they’re doing on your site.
· Which content is most popular.
· Which keywords brought them to you.
· Which browser they used.
· Whether they are mostly on mobile or desktop.
But, if you are looking for more detailed information about your audience, then Google Analytics may be the analytics tool for you! Whether you are using this information to help you in your content planning or content strategy, this is a great way to keep you in tune with the type of people you are attracting.
At the most basic level, you should be able to answer:

4. Check Out What Your Peers Are Doing
Checking out who else your audience reads, can tell you a lot about what they’re looking for. From the design and layout, to the pictures, tone and content; these are all helpful details to pay attention to. Through this type of research, you can then see where you fit in and what you can do improve your content and messaging. My favorite part of other blogs, is the comment section. This is so useful when you’re just starting out and don’t have an audience to engage with yet. You can use the questions and answers there as ideas for posts, products, services, content upgrades or start a series on your blog. This is exactly what your dream audience wants, in the own words! How you become valuable to your audience is by showing them you understand by helping them solve some of their problems. Go ahead and visit other blogs!
5. Beyond Your Blog
The technique of asking and answering questions to get a discussion going with your audience can be used on other platforms as well. Try it in your Facebook groups [without being spammy], Twitter chats and other forums you’re a part of. And read! Please read. You can learn a lot from other successful bloggers.
Your dream audience is already out there, you just need to get crystal clear about who they are and what they want. Guessing never works, if you’re going to be successful. Plus, you’ve got much better uses for all your time and effort!
