How To Declutter Your Wardrobe + Free Printable

Whenever the summer season rolls around, my wardrobe always needs a bit of a pick-me-up! If you have ever felt this way or are currently underwhelmed or overwhelmed with your wardrobe, it might be time to learn how to declutter your wardrobe! Let's get to werk!

First Things First, Assess What You Already Own

From time to time, we all suffer from a bit of forgetfulness but more so when it comes to our wardrobes. Not only do we waste money on unnecessary repeat purchases, but we also forget why we loved them in the first place! Before you go on a style rampage and throw away all of your good ish, pick your wardrobe apart ... yes, gradually pick it apart girl! When you deep dive in your wardrobe, make sure you set aside at least 1-2 hours to dedicate to your wardrobe assessment (this will ensure your patience and focus on this task). As you begin to divi up your closet, think of separating your pieces into three categories:

  1. What You Have
  2. What You Need
  3. What To Donate, Sell or Swap

It is so important to be organized while doing this assessment, you do not want irrational thought taking over and destroying your wardrobe. When you think of your closet in these three buckets, it will help you figure out where the missing pieces exist. To help get you on track, below is where you can find your free wardrobe assessment chart to jump-start your declutter session.

So, You Have Your 3 Buckets ... What's Next?

Here is where the process will become a down and dirty one ... throw on some sweats and tie that hair up and begin placing your pieces into one of the three categories shared above and below in your wardrobe assessment chart. But, let's really think about these three separate (but still equally important) categories for a second. Each category has a greater purpose, right now they are just one-dimensional facets that really don't make sense ... but you know I got you boo:

What You Have

This pile you created (or will create sometime soon) will be the framework of your wardrobe. Simply put, these pieces will either be classic staples, essential basics or trendy/statement pieces. Each of these pieces will help create a dynamic wardrobe perfectly FIT for you!

1. Classic Staples: Classics are items that help create timeless looks no matter the occasion. These pieces can include (but are not limited to):
  • Blazer
  • White Oxford Shirt
  • Jeans
  • Shift Dress
  • Jean/Leather/Khaki Jacket
2. Essential Basics: Basics are core pieces that provide balance to your everyday wardrobe. (You all know how much I LOVE my BASICS!):
  • T-shirts
  • Tanks
  • Leggings
  • Multifunctional Dresses
3. Trendy/Statment Pieces: Statement or trendy pieces add personality or stylish complexity to your look. There are some days when jeans and a t-shirt just won't cut it. I remedy this by throwing on my cape blazer or my vintage floral print blazer! Adding a statement or trendy piece can elevate your look within seconds!

What to Donate, Sell or Swap

This stack of clothing will either be on its last leg (and needs to be tossed) or clothing that is in great condition but needs a new home! First things first, purge your closet of the pieces that need to be tossed. Now, you can either donate, sell or swap the pieces that need new owners!

1. Donate: Take your gently-used items to some of your favorite organizations around town:
  • Women's Battered/Homeless Shelters
  • Dress For Success Locations
  • Goodwill
  • Salvation's Army
2. Sell: If these are pieces that you've spent a decent amount of money on or pieces that would perform well on third-party sites, then sell away love! Try some of my favorite sites to sell your clothing:
  • Vinted
  • Storenvy
  • Ebay
  • Uptown Cheapskate/Plato's Closet

3. Swap: Now, on to one of my favorites ... SWAP PARTIES! This is one of the best ways to enhance your wardrobe on a slim budget. So, gather your stylish girlfriends together and have each of them bring 1 bag of gently-used clothing that needs some new love! Not only is this a great way to bond with your girls, but you are padding your wardrobe as well.

What You Need

Now, this pile does not exist ... so it's up to you and me to create it! 9 times out of 10, the missing pieces you will need are things like:
  • Basics: Tees, tanks, leggings, multifunctional dresses & tops
  • Classics: Blazer, jackets, button-ups, simple blouses
  • Statement/Trendy Pieces: this is a freestyle category where you can add in pieces you are loving at the moment.

I know that this was ALOT to digest. But as promised, below you can snag your free wardrobe assessment chart to help you organize your wardrobe.
